Although the real problem with industrial wind power generation is that the turbines make noise and produce vibration (amplitude modulation), much is made of what they look like, too. At present, the question is, how far away will people be able to see the industrial wind turbines?

Answer: quite a way away. The turbines proposed for North Gower/Richmond and for the Spencerville area are 190 meters or 626 feet, which would be the tallest constructed in North America. (Why so tall? There is no significant wind resource here, so the developer has to build higher to get wind at greater levels of altitude.) The turbines will be equivalent to a 50-storey office tower. We have no such buildings in Ottawa.

So here is an interesting video from Better Plan, the citizens’ group in Wisconsin, that offers a scale model of industrial wind turbines. It’s just 2 minutes long, but very revealing.
