The North Gower Wind Action Group was formed in 2009 by residents of North Gower and Richmond, Ontario, who are concerned about the proposal for a development of eight to ten, 626-foot high, industrial wind turbines to be located adjacent to the village of North Gower, and in the south portion of Richmond.
As complaints of noise and vibration from other turbine installations grow weekly, and municipalities across Ontario complain to the provincial government that the Green Energy Act has removed their ability to plan their communities and protect their citizens, there is a need for North Gower-Richmond residents to learn more about wind turbines.
Our interest is to promote information on wind turbines and possible health effects, on possible impacts on property value, and as needed, on the wind industry in general. As the leadership group here has learned, not only are there problems with industrial wind turbine developments, wind energy itself has significant problems: it is unreliable and inefficient. In short, wind doesn’t work.
Our public information meeting held Sunday, January 23rd at the Alfred Taylor Centre, 2300 Community Way, North Gower was co-hosted with the South Branch Wind Opposition Group and the Beckwith Responsible Wind Action Group. Speakers were: Ian Hanna, who led the court case against the Green Energy Act in Ontario, Wolfe Island resident Janet White who told what life is like for a community living amongst 86 turbines, and Wind Concerns Ontario president John Laforet, who spoke on the politics of energy in Ontario, and how democracy has been removed for Ontario’s rural communities.
Another event was held April 13, with some very special speakers travelling from all over Ontario to discuss wind turbines. Every one had compelling reasons why these machines should not be built so near to people for reasons of health and economics.
An alarming trend among some residents is the notion that the industrial wind turbines can’t be bad, or our government wouldn’t be promoting them. Not so: all we say is, the more you read and listen, the more you learn.

The town of Hammond in Upper NY State is considering a law proposed by the town’s wind committee that would require Iberdrola Renewables to compensate property owners who see drops in their land values because of the presence of wind turbines. The proposal also requires the company to buy out any property owner who objects to living near a turbine.
