As you know, our community group in North Gower and south Richmond is in regular contact with other community action groups around the province. This gives us an idea of what other people are experiencing–people who are dealing with the reality of the industrialization of their rural community, not just the idea of it.
It’s not pretty.
We heard today from a resident of Chatham-Kent who got the following anecdotal comments from neighbours and others in her community after the 2.3 MW turbines in the 18-turbine development started operation over the last few weeks.
The weeks leading up to Christmas saw most of the 2.3 MW Siemens turbines in the 100 MW Talbot Wind project up and turning here in Chatham-Kent.Here are some of the comments that I have heard …– The sun was hitting them when I came up my laneway and they were so overwhelming that I broke down into tears.– I had to buy and put up curtains for the first time in 15 years so that I had some feeling of control.– I could hear them over the noise of my tractor while I was out working.– I didn’t sign up for living in an airport (from a non leaseholder). My wife can’t sleep. These comments have been made to the local councillor…– My horses have been more restless than normal.– A hog farm that has had problems with stray voltage in the past is even more concerned now.– The turbines are noisy (expressed by more than one).
